Central bank's foreign reserves to reach US$160bn

On 16 April the finance minister, Guido Mantega, said that Brazil's foreign currency reserves would reach US$160bn by the end of the year. Mantega's comments suggest that Brazil's central bank will continue to pursue a policy of buying US dollars in the domestic currency market to avoid the Real, becoming too strong.
